November 2023 Update

November 2023 NEWSLETTER

Introduction

Good afternoon folks.
Another Newsletter which highlights some of the recent and upcoming events which our Men’s Shed has either conducted, or supported. We do ask members to respond as soon as possible to our inaugural PNMSA Golf Day at Portsea GC and our Cardies Lunch so final numbers can be given to the venues.Graham Goudie (GG)

The 2023 AGM
Many members attended our AGM last Friday. As you can see by the photo below, it was a beautiful sunny day at The Hangar – and the positive comments from President John about the wonderful progress we continue to make as a group seemed to match the weather.

Key Reports were circulated to all members before the AGM and all were accepted unanimously. Members appreciated the ‘behind the scenes’ work carried out by Committee members, Activity Group leaders and Shed Captains over the past 12 months.

Election of Office Bearers and ‘Ordinary Committee Members’ was naturally a key Agenda Item. I am pleased to inform you that the four Office Bearers were elected unopposed and their election was endorsed by all members present.

Four members stood for election for the three vacant Committee positions. Members at the AGM were advised all four received very strong support and our Returning Officer, Secretary John Crough, moved that, in these circumstances, all four be declared elected. This was supported unanimously by members.

Your Committee of Management for the next 12 months is:-

Office Bearers
President – John Stevenson
Vice-President – Graham Goudie
Secretary – John Crough
Treasurer – Mark Ferguson

Committee Members
Warren Dickins
Malcolm Barrow
Rob Koller
James (Jim) Rennie

Congratulations to Mark, Rob and Jim on joining the Committee and we are looking forward to having a great 12 months ahead for our members and social members. We also thank our past Treasurer, Richard, for his tireless work over the past 3 years and also Lloyd for his Committee work over the past 12 months.

Golf Day at Portsea GC on Monday 4 December

We need members and friends to please book as soon as possible – we still have a few spots available for groups of four. If you want any further information, please feel free to contact either Lino or myself.

If you are playing the 9 hole Ambrose it will only cost $85pp – and this includes a welcome chat, 9 hole shotgun start across the 18 holes, prizes for NTPs and long drives and a fantastic gourmet BBQ lunch in this wonderful setting. We are not adding any ‘fundraising’ to this event as it is a purely social occasion – hopefully the first of an annual event on our PNMSA Calendar.

If you want to book a foursome (as some have done already), that is ideal. If you only have yourself – or one or two friends but need an extra few people to make the group of four – no problem – we will match up players to get the best possible combinations. Just have a chat with Lino or myself (GG) and we will help sort it out.

See you on the course.

Petanque at Portsea
John Crough writes –
Many thanks to Peter Grey and the Portsea Petanque Club for their hospitality at Percy Cerutty Oval on Friday 10 November. A very enjoyable (and in some cases competitive) event in perfect weather in a delightful location. Judging from the reactions of some shedders the club may be about to acquire some new members!Wear a Hat Day
This is an edited version of an email from Maria Rigby regarding the successful function held at The Hangar. – ‘A wonderful celebration for Colleen Mackay’s work on the Peninsula. Colleen gave an inspirational speech detailing all the problems people are experiencing on the Peninsula. Poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, students going to school with patched up shoes and no food etc.

The charity uniforms4u she set up a few years ago provides students of all ages with recycled and new uniforms, new shoes, backpacks and recycled laptops. Together with the raffle donations and ticket sales we will make nearly $1500. Money is still coming in as people were so moved by Colleen’s efforts in so many areas of assistance to the community.

A big thank you to all you lovely ladies that attended and to the 4 lovely ladies who were ill on the day but donated the money.

Thank you to Sue Devery, Janet Eldred and Jeanette Fox for helping with the washing up. To Janet and Angela for collecting money for the raffle. To Susie Bell and Angela Crough with assisting in organising the event and the beautiful floral arrangements from Susie’s garden.

Thank you to the following local trades that supported us

Italico (The food was delicious and plentiful), Dunes Golf Club, Antipodes, Blue Illusion, Cape Merchant, Elephant Lifestyle Sorrento, Blairgowrie Pharmacy provided the raffle prize valued at $200. Scicluna’s donated 4 fruit platters.’

Cardies Lunch at Sardos

Members of the 500 Card Club, which meets every Tuesday night, are reminded that the end of the year Lunch for members and partners will be held Sardos once again on 23 November. Please check with BigM if you need any further details.

The Sorrento Rotary Heritage Car Show

The second Heritage Car Show was held recently and was reportedly a great success. Many members attended in various capacities and others just enjoyed the beautiful weather down at Point Nepean and checking out  the hundreds of fantastic vehicles. The Shed Men also enjoyed the gig and the positive feedback from attendees.
