June 2023 Update

JUNE NEWSLETTER

Introduction
There is a fair bit of news and information in this month’s Newsletter – so sit back, have a coffee (or something more warming) and hopefully share some of the activities our members and associates are enjoying as a result of their connection to this terrific group.

Graham

Free Hearing Tests – with a free coffee as well!!

With a slow initial takeup of bookings, we are throwing open the option to all members, partners, social members and associates. We have up to 36 15-minute time slots and plenty of variety between 10:00 and 14:00,
Friday, June 16th at the Hangar.
Please contact Terry Phippen on 0488 115 433 or email terryophippen@gmail.com and make that booking.

Blooms can test 2 people in the same time slot so book in with your partner asap.

Blooms have also arranged with Alana from Flat Blk regarding a Free coffee with a hearing check – how good is that!

Lunches and Functions

Your group had been  busy organising the Lunches and Functions for the year and are delighted to announce that the bookings are now open for a fantastic mid year Cocktail party at Portsea Surf Life Saving Club on 28 July. Thank you Warren for the Flyer below.

We had 35 blokes travel across to Queenscliff on 17 May to enjoy some great food and wine and a tour of the new ferry terminal. It was agreed by all to have been one of our best outings – and great value for money. Thanks to Lino for his work in arranging this event.

We have decided to repeat this event again in October – but this time all associates are also invited. Further details will be announced closer to the date.

  • We are still considering the possibility of holding a PNMSA 9 Hole Golf Comp for members and social members and their partners in October or November. The working concept is a 9 hole game (such as Ambrose) in the morning followed by presentations and then lunch at the venue. All members and social members and partners would be invited to come for the lunch so it would enable those who don’t play golf to also enjoy a social day out. Thanks to those who have already expressed interest. Anyone else thinking they may wish to participate, please sms Graham Goudie (GG) on 0419 02 1900.

Bus Drivers wanted for a new Community Bus!!

Thanks to Brian Stacey and Sorrento Rotary our local community now has access to a 25-seater bus!  This bus will be housed at St Joseph’s School in Sorrento but will also be available – through Rotary – to other community groups. The finer details are still being discussed with St Joseph’s and Sorrento Primary School who are keen to make use of this  option for excursions. No doubt this generous gesture from Sorrento Rotary will prove to be a great asset to our community.

Being a larger vehicle, the driver will have to have a current “Light Rigid” licence. The 2 primary schools are covered at the moment, however Rotary would like to hear from other licenced drivers in our community who would be willing to drive on the odd occasion.

There is also a possible option to take the training required for the licence if you are interested! The cost of the training could be funded through Rotary. This will suit someone who can focus on the road with 25 happy passengers
Interested – then please contact Brian Stacey ASAP on 0412 458 317

A request from Terry – our ‘Man About Town’
Bird Box Assembly at St Joseph’s School:

Looking for 2 or 3 “helpers” (members or social members) at St Joseph’s on Friday 9th June from 9:15 for about an hour. The kids are assembling 6 pre-cut bird boxes kindly donated by member David McCausland.

This is part of their nature program and Terry is happy to say the boxes are all cut to size and “easy” to assemble. The plan is to glue the units that week. The painting will be done in a later class.
Please contact Terry Phippen on 0488 115 433 or

Please note: Current Working With Children clearance mandatory
Did you Know??
Member Malcolm Barrow recently purchased a very smart vest with our PNMS logo embroidered on it (yes, you can buy one – just ask Secretary John Crough). After a meeting, still wearing his vest, he went to REPCO in Rosebud ans was advised that all Men’s Shed members are entitled to a 10% discount – so there you go!Ramble on the back beach?
We are invited to join the Nepean Conservation Group for their June ramble on Sunday 11 June through the Mornington Peninsula National Park. If you wish to participate, meet the Group at St Paul’s Road, Sorrento, MPNP carpark at 1.00pm. Finish 3.30pm.

They are walking from St Paul’s MPNP carpark to Sorrento Backbeach – they are wanting to combine their ramble with some discussion about the value and qualities of this remarkable place, as well as to highlight some of the issues facing us now and into the immediate future.

One of the Parks Victoria rangers will join the ramble.

New Members
A warm welcome to new members Alan Ritson, Jeff Barwick and Sam Digiglio – we look forward to seeing you around the various activities of our Men’s Shed. We also warmly welcome new Social member Gloria Watson who we will meet possibly at our Friday evening sessions at The hangar or other social events coming up soon.

That’s all for now folks.
